What the heck is a scrobble?
We all grew up with an assortment of musical styles and have developed our own taste at or around our teenage years. I have been haphazardly throwing around the word scrobble in casual language not realizing some of you have no idea what I’m talking about. Frankly, just over a year ago, I didn’t know what it was either.
At first, when Andrew mentioned the idea behind the scrobbling service, Last.fm, I was curious but ultimately not interested in any of this whatsoever. Honestly, I just didn’t see myself seeing any benefit to me. Obviously, I have changed my tune (no pun intended). I have used other cool services, such as Pandora, Playlist, etc and was just not excited about the prospect of this idea of scrobbling.
Enter Ubuntu Linux with Rhythmbox and iPod Mini with Rockbox. When I made a life altering desicion to move from a Windows environment at home to a Linux environment - I had unlocked many new things that I was just oblivious to in Windows. It started with using Rhythmbox’s Plugins to transfer music from my computer to my iPod. I was already impressed that I didn’t need iTunes anymore (sadly, this changed when I got the iPhone). Browsing the plugins I had found a Last.fm feature. Curiously, I thought “why the heck would they even want this here?” So I checked the box, signed up for an account and miracoulusly realized that I was posting my music online. That’s when I thought “oooooh, I get it now. People can see what music I’m listening to by just listening - and Last.fm recommends music depending on what I listen to - and I can play recommended music off the site - and I can play some of my ‘listened to’ music on site. I have seen the light.”
So by posting what I listened to, I scrobbled. I haven’t looked back since. Last.fm has provided me with a great deal of music to discover. Something we all can appreciate every so often. If you haven’t done so already, get a last.fm account and find out how you can scrobble your music from your favorite audio program.
I’ll be posting my last.fm adventures with the iPod and the iPhone. Also, feel free to friend me if you haven’t already. The site itself has so many benefits that I feel like I haven’t even scratched the surface of. Did I mention this is a free service?

Last.fm is indeed pretty cool, from many viewpoints. I would never have believed my music did matter to anyone until I saw how many I listeners I had.
